Dear P1 Parents,
P1 has been busy learning the past few weeks! In Literacy we have talked about reasons people write. Outside of our class are examples of recount writing (sharing an event or situation that happened in the past). We have also continued our poetry work and talked how poems are often written to entertain readers. Students are also learning how to get their minds ready for reading, much like warming up before PE or Sport.
Using non-standard units of measurement has been our focus in Maths. Whilst measuring students have been learning and using big words like: measurement, capacity, estimation, length and weight. Students in P1 have been ordering things from tallest to shortest, heaviest to lightest and using estimation and scales to help sort capacities from biggest to smallest.
Our Unit of Inquiry began this week (thanks to all who have brought in boxes, bottles, and heaps of other recycled items). Students have been exploring these materials and talking about their as well as materials found in our classrooms and throughout the school. Looking specifically at properties how strong they are, whether they will absorb water and in what ways they are similar or different. Our field trip to the local construction site was another great opportunity to observe materials being used for different purposes. Thanks to Kyle’s mum for coming with!
We have been having great fun in PE preparing for Sports Day. In addition to practicing running, jumping and throwing we have been growing stronger whilst using scooters. In Art we have been talking about lines. Early in the week we ‘took a dot for a walk’ and later reflected on shape. After the holiday we will continue exploring shape and patterns.
P1 students will begin swimming the week after break. A reminder will go out upon our return.
