Dear P1 Parents,
I hope you all had a lovely holiday. Just before holiday we ended with several exciting events: our first P1 field trip and Sports Day. Thank you for helping ensure they were successful for your child. We’ve been wonderfully busy in P1 the last few weeks (as a result of a busy week before holiday, the letter to go home did not make n our home folders). We have exciting things planned for this next term as well.
The following are a few reminders and updates:
Swimming:
We begin swimming Wednesday, 20 October. Please send with your child a swimming costume, towel and sunscreen.
Literacy:
The connections students are making between reading and writing are incredible! Whilst reading we continue talking about the importance of warming up our minds before we begin reading. You may here us say, “Hmmm..I wonder what this book is about” as we look at the title and cover of a new book. We are also “reading across words” (hearing, isolating and identifying all letter sounds in words) whilst pointing to individual words. Our reading groups will continue reading a variety of leveled texts this week while learning comprehension strategies. Students will look at the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts and compare them to our own writing; wonderful examples of non-fiction recounts are now hanging outside of the classroom.
Maths:
Our class is beginning a mathematics unit called Pattern Trains and Hopscotch Paths. For the next few weeks, we will explore questions like these: What makes a pattern a pattern? How do patterns give us information so that we can predict what comes next? What shapes can we identify in patterns?
Being able to recognize patterns is an important tool in mathematics. We will have many opportunities to copy, create, and extend patterns using materials such as pattern blocks, color tiles, and interlocking cubes.
POI:
Our field trip provided a great opportunity to make connections with what we’re talking about in class. This week we are talking about the properties of different materials and what makes them suitable for different structures. Students will be introduced to the Design Cycle and will then have opportunities to build towers and walls.
